I am working on a project with my yag that is larger than its working area. So I built an x y table but needed a way to measure how far I moved the part between each run. I ended up designing a vernier scale that can be put on jig that needs a way to measure accurately.

The scale goes down to .001" but I doubt it is actually accurate to much more than .005", I suppose the accuracy mostly depends on how accurate the laser you use to create it is.

In case you don't know what a vernier scale is or how to read one take a look at this link

Why not go 'the whole hog' and connect a stepper motor to the drive shaft of the lead screw on the table (if you have one) then connect it your cobra. You can then program exact distance or even let the software automatically cut the image up and tile it!

This is what I would attach to the X Y Table.... Or a similar version.

For something that gets use a lot that may be worth it. The job I am working on will be 9 parts.

I have a similar one on the Z axis screws on mine Al, set to zero at bed surface so I can just hit the Z axis control and move till it reads material thickness. (I hate auto focus, they just get snapped off most of the time)

cheers
