Riding my motorcycle through a heavily treed neighborhood on a scouting trip and hit paydirt. Cut up and stacked by the road ready to be picked up. Not sure what it is though - my ID sources all seem to say American Elm. Leaves are alternate on the twig and toothed with a very pointy tip. They have a funky feel - kinda like rubbing very high number sandpaper. Thoughts?

It is definitely an elm and I think it is Siberian Elm as it does have the dark center and the bark looks correct also. They have been used as yard or curb trees for many years because they grow fast and are tough trees to kill.

Hope that helps,

Jeff

Thanks - still looking at pics and descriptions. Fuzzy is the word I was looking for to describe the feel of the leaves.

That is a trait of the elms, the leaves have ridges in them and do have small hairs on the underside that make them feel fuzzy. Here is a leave picture and a bark picture.

Love the color of that heart wood - but looking further at how dark it is and more pics of the leaf, I'm beginning to believe this might be Red (slippery) Elm. The bark and the curved pointy leaf tip are spot on.

Definitely Slippery elm or -iss elm in the south. Beautiful and good turning wood--green.

Ahh. So that's the one. My granddaddy called it that except he pronounced the elm as, "ellum." I have read that it gets very hard when it drys. Will get them pithed and good and sealed up tomorrow.
