I used to buy Claphams salad bowl finish as a final treatment on cutting boards and butcher blocks. it's about $20-$25 for 8 ounces. great stuff, but costly. I read that it is basically mineral oil and beeswax mixed together. i had a large 60 board order, so i wanted to do it as cost effective as possible.

I bought pure beeswax (amazon, 2lb for $11) and food grade mineral oil (4 bottles, $12). Total cost about $23. I mixed the two in a pot and put over a low flame on the stove.

I now have "salad bowl finish" that looks, feels, and smells exactly like Claphams. I have about 4 times as much (about 32 ounces) for about the same price. It was fun experimenting with the mixture of oil and wax to get the right final product.

If you were thinking of giving it a try, i'd highly recommend it, it's pretty easy to do.
