I have decided to purchase a used RBI when one comes on the market that seems a good value.

As there are a lot of them that have been sold over the years I want to make sure I get one in good condition as well as a design that will stand up to heavy use.

As to the first point what should I look for in terms of wear and tare?

As to the second point, I was concerned as I read a comment on a post on some forum (cant recall which) that the newer Bushton/RBI units may not be using bearings in the same points that the old units did but have switched to bushings.

Comments are welcome.

Check to make sure the table is flat and that there is little to no vibration. Turn on the saw and balance a nickel on the table. Make sure that the blade arms are aligned.

Those are just some basic things to look out for. I have a DW788 so don't know about the RBI's, but would recommend to get a variable speed scroll saw if possible.
