I've made quite a few of them, both wood and glass. I have never used any plastic or metal tracks; I mill dados (often 1/4" wide, but it depends) into the wood substrate to make an integrated track. The dado at the top has to be milled extra deep in order for the door to be able to slide up into it far enough that the bottom of the door can clear the bottom of the cabinet and drop down into its dado. The height of the door has to be sized so that it can be fit into place, as discussed above, w/o falling out after it's dropped into the lower dado. Simple match or a full size drawing will get you there. The cabinet below has both sliding glass doors and sliding tambour doors.
