Being a history nerd, an epiosode of "Modern Marvels" airing last night was especially interesting as it covered the history of logging in the U.S.
Among the interesting pieces of trivia:
Rags to Riches story: Friedrich Weyerhaeuser was a German immigrant who worked as a night watchman for a Great Lakes logging company. When the company fell on hard times, Weyerhauser bought it. The rest, as they say, is history.
Andreas Stihl invented the chainsaw. Though it revolutionized logging, it was a cumbersome, 2-man tool until the 1940s, when a logger named Cox came up with the 90-degree tooth geometry for clearing the chips. Cox got his idea by examining the mandable of a wood-borer.
