I spent a little bit of time in the shop of Friday and Sunday and turned a couple of bowls.

This one was from one of the 8/4 "scraps" I got a few weeks ago. It's maple, 8" x 1 1/2" finished with antique oil, another coat or two and it will be ready for buffing.
I also got some transtint dyes and wanted to try them out, so dyed the rim blue. I'm really happy with how the dye worked, went on evenly and didn't have any trouble with bleeding.

This one is from a blank I got at one of our club meetings. It wasn't marked but it looks like ash. It's 10" x 2" and for the rim on this one I used Fiebings leather dye (good coverage and it's a true black). After the dye I wiped on some gold rub-n-buff but it dried so quick I had to sand off the excess which also took some of the dye. So I added another light coat of the Fiebings which left just the right amount of gold poking through. Didn't notice until I uploaded the pics but I should have got one straight on of the face since the gold doesn't show in these pics.
Finished with antique oil, still needs a few more coats and then buffing.

Kathy,

Was this wood already dry before you turned it or was this roughed out then dried then finished or the last choice was it turned green? In any case they came out great. I like the shape somewhat of a cross between a platter and a bowl.

Thanks guys!

Paul, the maple was kiln dried and the ash? seemed pretty dry, so far it's held it's shape. Most of what I do is turned green to finish so I'm used to somewhat oval bowls, but these should stay pretty stable.

They both look great, nice clean form and the dye adds character.

Definitely nice bowls Kathy. The dyeing looks great, and adds a wonderful touch. Your ogee form has very nice balance and flows very well top and bottom.

I really like them both, especially the way the beads and dye work together.
