I'm wanting to purchase a few 4inch buffing wheels to use on my bench grinders to not only polish wood but also metals parts.

Would Green Honing Compound suffice for polishing metal/steel parts on a buffing wheel or is there something better? I have Tripoli for the non-ferrous parts.

Sorry, I'm talking about restoring chisels, hand planes, whatever I can find that looks crusty.

Ta.

Green stuff is generally used for stainless steel when it comes to polishing. It will polish carbon steel, but you're better off getting a couple of different buffs and finding a chart that describes various compounds, what they're used for and whether each compound is a removal cut or a finishing polish.

Tripoli, red, white, and green. Use green most of the time. Just what I do.

Grizzly catalog has an excellent section describing compounds and the various buffs to use.

For what it's worth, I only use white on my buffer because the aluminum oxide is less nasty than the chromium. Works okay for carving tools. (edit: I shouldn't say "only", I also have a coarser brown compound)
