Was that Joe Calhoon on the Martin shaper? I heard he was manning it and is now a Martin distributor. Great guy. The shaper is in the 75K range. Did you see the Barth at the Martin booth? Dave

Rick. You missed one picture and I didn't think to take it. Lee Valley's booth. I too was struck by the table with the one walnut leg. I believe they called it Melting Chocolate. The highlight of the show for me was having dinner with 4 members of the CMA and William NG. He is a very pleasant individual. I feel the Vegas show is getting smaller every other year.

I just spent a couple of days there, my first time. I went mostly for the workshops but the trade show was very impressive, and some of the stuff in the Fresh Wood competition just made me want to go out and sell all of my tools and quit my job....I hope someday I have ONE student of that caliber.

Las Vegas in late July is not a lot of fun, though. Next time I'll rent a car.

who is it that's got 75,000 for a spindle moulder? Martin is good but if your getting that much money for a spindle moulder you would think. Martin just sale the heads?

You would think for that money the head would move over the work. looks like window sash being milled.

that planer head sure cut down on the inserts and does that last roller not drive?

Jack, that is a window sash as the operator and dealer in Martin is Cascade Millwork in CO. They do a lot of that and have a high end shop in Ouray. The Felder Silent Head insert cutter is pretty well designed. I've seen the finish from it and every bit as good as the Byrd. The claim to fame is that the head requires less power than other insert heads. It was developed for their lower priced lines to run with the smaller single phase motors but has become so popular that even the Format stuff has it available. They get quite a premium for it. The second roller is connected to the first over on the left side. you can't see it in the picture. I'll keep my 299 ITCH though. Dave

thanks dave

EU sash is what it looks like the Martin is milling or it looks that way to me. surprised that's being done in the US though.

you ever see one of theses?

ya it looks a cheaper head on the planer but it only 18,000? and i guess the knifes don't last as long ether do they. mind you you only kill one insert when you do hit metal/dirt .I'll keep the skewed knife head on the Wadkin.

Jack, that is a neat machine. Production work is way out of my league. Fun to watch. Felder did a couple of nice things with the spiral head. They numbered the four edges of the inserts so you can keep track of where you are at and they cut a deep groove for chip extraction. I still think Tersa is big in Europe but Felder got swamped with european orders and had to scramble to increase production. I don't know. Still seems like Tersa with a widebelt would be the handiest. Dave

Dave surely that head spins faster than most with a one knife cut? is there a spec on HP and head speed?

Jack, the Felder head is a two or three row cutter. I'm not sure which but will find out. Dave

On Joe's outfit.. Someone actually asked him where he got the overall's while I was standing there, he said McFeely's..

Joe seemed to be a super nice fella. The Martin Shaper was really quite a lot of money but it was fully loaded.. Even Joe said there where things he wouldn't order on that where on that machine.. The feeder had the coolest method of switching from flat to fence work.. literally a few seconds ..

People spend $50,000 on a new Pick-up which they may only keep for a few years.. A fella came up to talk to Joe while I was there, he had a Martin T-22 Shaper, he ran it hard every day.. He said it was as dead on accurate as the day it was made. Seemed like a better investment than a new truck.

The Wegoma feeder is a Comatic rebadged. Last year I looked at all the versions and the Wegoma seemed like it went through an extra step of fit and finish compared to all the others. Might be just perception though as everything looks rosy in the Martin booth. Very rare on the used market. I did find a few year old Steff Primomatic that was similar with a little different stand. That type is really the first choice if you do a lot of vertical work. Dave

Hi Jack,
The Unicontrol is the best window machine. They take up a lot of room in the shop though. Florian Engelfried in Oberkochen does a great job of rebuilding older units. Here is one that is better suited for small shops. From Adam King’s shop in the UK.

Rick, thanks for taking a picture of that table dripping chocolate. Several people told me about that but I never had a chance to walk the show. Made it to the Felder booth to see John R., Carl and Arthur but that was about it for machines. Show was small but seemed to have a good buzz. I had fun and met a lot of new woodworking friends.

Back to reality today running my outdated T 26. That T 27 had every option available from Martin, hence the stiff price tag. Without all the bells and whistles a T 12 can be had in the low 20s.

Dave I am not a full on Martin dealer. I am just able to rep the machines to people attending our school. Felder plans to install a small 700 series shaper in our workshop since that is what a lot of home shops use. With that we will be able to teach technique on most types of Euro shapers.

The vest is a Blaklader Kangaroo available from Mcfeelys.

Joe
