Picked up a Stanley #31 today. right up front there is a worn spot on the sole. Almost 1/4" worn away at the front corner. Looking for a fix to repair the area:confused:.267278267279267280Along with a few other items that were at the sale. #31 was just $15 , the rest of the mess was $4.50. :D

ps: saw set has a "USA 98" cast in one handle, nothing else so far. Just starting to clean it up, after I clean up the Stanley block plane's parts...

Seems to have all the original parts, shame to let it go on like that.
Single pat. date on lateral lever, with the "STANLEY" reading from left to right in block letters
2 patent dates and L.Bailey patent in the adjuster wheel.
a "BAILEY'S PATENT DEC 24 1867" stamp is on the chip breaker.
a brass barrel nut for the tote, the rest are all steel screws. 90% of the Japaning i still there
Stamped right in the nose of the base STANLEY RULE & LEVEL CO. No 31

maybe a beech patch, let into the nose area?

almost forgot about that wide iron...stamped on it is just "STANLEY" "RULE & LEVEL CO."

I'd be inclined to plane/sand the entire sole smooth and flat, glue a new full length sole to what remains of the old sole and then re chop the mouth. Don't know if that is the "right" thing to do but it seems like you would ultimately end up with a more uniform sole that way.

If its only the first couple of inches, I wouldn't worry about it. Sand/plane as Chris suggests to get the critical working areas true and only apply the sole if the mouth at that stage was gaping. Mouth looks pretty good as far as I can tell from the photo.

Well, got all the metal parts cleaned up267293267294267295267296maybe start on the wood parts next?

Amongst the treasures I bought today, there is a block plane base casting for a Stanley #18-1/4 267297and a saw set by Morrill267298along with a cap iron for a 220 style plane. Not too bad a day?
