I think this is either a birch or an elm. Elm would make more sense, but the bark sure looks like a birch. Please help. ;)

The leave are pinnately compound and alternate on the stem. I tore a couple leaves off and they were very tough for their size.

Location is southeast central Texas (Chappell Hill)

If it's Birch, take a little piece of bark and put flame to it. It should burn right away with black smoke. Lot of oil in Birch bark. Great fire starter in wet weather if you ever get stranded out in the elements.
