I have an old Ryobi S500A sander with sentimental value (one of the first tools given to me by my wife, before we were even married, about 22 years ago).

If you are familiar with the S500A, you know that it is an awesome made-in-Japan 1/12th sheet finish sander that can not only get into tight spaces, but is just awesome because of the great job it does.

It needs a new foam pad. They (Ryobi) don't make replacements any more. It looks to be 3/16" thick, and is some sort of black rubber material, and is adhered with some sort of adhesive.

What would you use for this purpose? Do home centers sell a suitable foam for some other application that I could just cut to shape and glue on? I mean, if I knew where to find some 3/16" thick foam rubber that was fairly dense and durable, I could take it from there.

I checked McMaster, and you have to buy quite a bit. And if you get the adhesive-backed stuff, it is actually very expensive.

Any ideas welcome.

Phil,

I think I saw some in a Klingspor catalog. It's been a while though.

What about mouse pads? Too thin, you could always use a double thickness.
