I have a simple tapering jig, like Norm's, but I'd like something a little more sophisticated...maybe with hold downs, that can do legs and slighter wider boards...maybe something that is sold as a jig...? Show me you favorite, please and let me know where I can get one.

IMO, the only good tapering jigs are shop made. I like this style.

Here is mine, not much to make and it works very well. With mine I have it so it runs on the fence and not in the miter slot so I can do wide boards.

There is a new one from Micro Jig. I have seen it and it looks pretty well thought out.

Very nice Bill. Where do I get the parts?

I think everything came from Rockler including the bit for the T-Tack for the thin fence.

Looks simple, Bill and VERY sturdy.

Mine's not too different from Bill's, except I like mine to run in the miter slot (either one). For large tapers, I use my tracksaw.

That jig appears to be made using Veritas Surface Clamps...

Yeah! Those are the clamps, but who makes the perforated board? Would these clamps work with a Festool table top?

Board is probably shop made. Apple ply or baltic birch, a forstner bit, and a drill press. Nothin toit :D

Several years ago, John Thompson (a creeker) posted a tapering jig he made that was pretty slick. Maybe you can do a little research and dig it out.

Go to Woodsmithshop.com....under free videos and plans.....do a search using "taper" for search word. Episode 106 and Episode 609 have plans for one. I will probably build the one from episode 609.

$150-plus for a taper jig is getting a little up there for me. I like Bill's general idea. A stop that is X / Y adjustable is a plus. Seems I've seen plans for a few good ones. The pic you posted is from Fine Woodworking. If you have an account there you will find several good versions that don't include $75 clamps (no offense to Rob Lee). JMHO.

not quite sure i see how using the fence over the miter slot would better facilitate wide boards?

If the jig rides in the miter slot it has a set distance between the blade and the maximum capacity of the jig. If the jig rides the fence it can go as far away from the blade as the fence goes.

Mine is the same as Joe's. Slides in the miter slot. I do not have to hold it against the fence. I have used it to make a few items like these:

I made one a lot like Bills. Not only does it feel a lot safer to use than the hinged style, it also has the advantage that you can see exactly where the cut is going to be.

Glenn gave you the main answer, I use my jig I think more to straighten boards then tapering. If I have a board that is not straight on one side I will use the jig to make it straight and then I have an edge to put against the fence to straighten the other side, this gives me a board with parallel edges.

AH HA, that is a great idea. Now, another project!:)

Plans for a taper jig appeared in ShopNotes magazine issue 33. Plan is also available from Woodsmith magazine website for a fee.
