I looking for a decent simple working video editing software. I can never seem to get windows movie maker to save a file anymore.. The editing software that came with my Nikon Camera works well with digital video shot with either the Nikon, (.mov files) or my earlier Fuji (.avi file) but if I try to import a converted to .avi or .mov video(tape) clip, it tells me it does not accept that file format. I'm assuming it's looking for a marker in the file that is not there in the converted tape to.avi or .mov files..
I'm Looking for simple editing software that works, and won't cost a fortune. There are lots of packages out there, but what works, and what doesn't? Just looking for suggestions/recommendations. About the most complicated work I do is for my personal YouTube stuff..

Bill,
No expert here but I have AVS software and have used it to convert files to viewable movies, etc. They have audio and other software also if you need.
Just google AVS video converter.

I've had good results from Total Recorder. I've been getting free updates for years. I just looked and the super duper version is $54.

Big plus - they're Canadian!

I use Adobe Premier Elements for video editing, bought as a package with Adobe Photoshop Elements which I use for photo manipulation.

Windows movie maker is OK for basic edits, but need to download the proper version as it has a few more features than the default than comes packaged with windows, and it won't edit a lot of formats so you often need to convert the file first.

Personally, I have been using AppGeeker video converter for a while, there is a edit feature (trim, crop, merge, split, add effect, etc.), pretty basic, maybe work for what you need. Also, it can convert videos to different formats, and resize, pretty simple to use.

More info: http://www.ilikemall.com/how-to/convert-mp4-to-mov-mac.html

Try it out and at least you will be able to see exactly what the edited files should look like.

Great.. Thanks for all the ideas.. Most of them probably offer a crippled or time stunted download test version, so I will try them all, pick my Fav, and buy the one that works best for me..
Thanks again for your input it gives me a good place to start..

Corel has a free trial of Video Studio Pro. I received that software with a digital video camera I purchased 10 years ago (it was Ulead prior to Corel purchasing it). The software was easy to use and had a lot of spiffy features that could convert many different flavors of video files and edit other goodies into the video. I have not looked at the newer versions, but if I need to edit video any time soon, I will play with it. No doubt there is even more great special effects it can do now.
