Build your own vise

What size wooden screw should be used on a vise? Will 1" work or do I need to got, to m1 1/4 or 1 1/2?? Any advise.

Bigger will be better in that the larger screw has more surface area to "bite". Better holding power, and a lessening of the chance for breaking the screw or jaw body.

Either way, get coarse threads. Thats a benefit over metal one imho.
