Greetings: Does anyone have a dimensioned drawing for the finger rest knob on a Stanley # 140 Skew block plane?? Patrick Leach also says the knob on a # 110 or # 120 are the same - I have lots of applicable rosewood and a midi lathe, so would like to attempt to spin out a replacement. I got a decent #140 a couple weeks back, sans the knob and side plate - will put a request in the Classified for the side plate. Thanks - Dave B

I think the knob on the #220 plane is similar, except for the dimple on the top. If you post a picture of the stud on the 140 for the knob we may be able to tell you if it's the same. And there's a lot of #220 planes out there. [I have one that I keep saying I'm going to make a new knob for one day - the old knob is some undistinguished wood]

Mike:

Good idea, I hardly ever see ' knobbed' 110, 120,or 220 planes out here. Fair amount of others though.
The threads are a hair under 7/16" across and the stud is about 1/2" high.
Hope the photo comes through.

That looks like the stud in my 220. I'll measure it tomorrow and let you know. If it's the same, I'll work something out with you if you don't have access to a 220 locally.

St. James Bay sells the side plate, and replacement screws to hold the plate on, if those are missing: http://www.stjamesbaytoolco.com/. Hit the "tools" link, then the "Reproduction Stanley parts" link, then scroll down.

Yes, the knob from the 220 and 110 fit, if you happen to find an older one with a good knob. That's what's on my 140 now - it came knobless, too.

Looks like the same stud. See if these pictures are enough measurements for you to make a replacement.

Well, I turned a knob out of Cocobolo, I didn't get the ' sweep ' at the top quite right, but I was having a bear of a time with this piece of wood anyway.
I buffed it a bit on the lathe and parted it off after experimenting with the hole size. The thread OD was .411 ", and I used a 13/32" ( .406" ) jobber bit for the hole. Turned it on ( barely ) by hand and it seemed to machine it's own threads to some degree.
The Cocobolo is such sweet wood in the way it's chatoyance is spectacular. Forgive the crappy cell phone pics, and thanks guys for the help. Will get around to ordering a side plate and giving it a rehab in the future.
BTW, I am a rank amateur at turning, so don't be cruel, criticism is OK!!

Looks nice.

Does the replacement side plate come with replacement screws?

Jim: They are a separate item at three bucks a pop - - I suppose they are true to the original and likely a weird thread - something I will have to check out.
