This video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xw0VvnazYQc) was intriguing - a straight forward approach to creating a very inexpensive and effective chuck for finishing the bottom of a bowl. The video is in Spanish, but you'll get the idea by watching it.

If you have trouble with the link, search for #37 Plato Longworth by Miguel Sanchez on Youtube.

Happy Turning!

Pretty good description of making a Longworth chuck, in English. Text, not video.

For those of you that wish to buy and not build (beyond my skill level). There is one avialiable on the bay. It's a high quality chuck, but pricey. Works well. Comes in different sizes. No affiliation. I believe CSUSA also sells one.

CSUSA does sell one, and the wheels are phenolic so very sturdy. Instead of a threaded connector on the back it has a disk that seats in your chuck. Only reason I have not bought one is that I'm pretty happy with my vacuum system.
