This car blew by about Mach 10 yesterday. Can anybody ID it? I'm not much up on newer cars but it's a sharp looking ride!265887

Thanks guys! Not the kind of car you see every day around these parts!

Looks like a Volga.

But it can't be, there's no puddle of oil beneath nor
the trail of "extra" parts behind.

Looks like a Volga.

The fact that the image name is "volga-07.jpg" helps a lot. :)

Good detective work!:)
BTW I was going to guess it was a Borgward Isabella so I would have been wrong anyway.

Stephen,

I don't see any jpg that indicates Volga. But it would make sense. There are a lot of style clues on it that look like early '50's Studebaker. East European countries copied a lot of cars back then, most notably Packard (which coincidently was merged with Studebaker about then). They made them for many years. What makes me wonder is the chrome wheels, and wide tires in different sizes. Another thing is that it is a two door hardtop style body.

Is this a modified show car? It looks waaay to good to be a Volga, unless maybe it was for some Commissar.

Rick potter

Big edit: Hah! I was right. The car I am lusting after is a custom show car. It's styled to look vaguely like a '56 to '70 Volga, but it has almost no Volga parts. Built on a BMW 850CSi, chassis with a V 12 motor. Some custom car maker has made about 10 of them for the super rich Russian market. No price given, but they turned down a million bucks for it. Great article on it...........google Volga V-12 coupe, Car & Driver. Shame on you Stephen.

I saw this one (in mirror) a few weeks ago on the Purdue University campus. I've never seen one in the flesh around here before this. I know what it is (brand), do you?

Doesn't mean it is a Volga.

Per Rick's suggestion of googling "volga v-12 coupe", I did. Here's the relevant link:

http://www.caranddriver.com/features/volga-v-12-coupe

Those genuine Volgas neither looked nor drove like this coupe. So ignore the chrome "Volga" letters on this coupe's trunk and the famous "shark's teeth" Volga grille, because this Volga coupe is not a Volga at all. Only the head- and taillights are original.

Can we put this one to bed and move on to the fun of other tricky-to-identify sightings?

What I like about the custom volga is that it is more or less "car art". It brings together a styling concept, with modern power.

A couple years ago there was one of those, a wagon, with full woodgrain, for sale at a Toyota dealership near here. First time by I thought my eyes were deceiving me until I saw it again several more times over a couple weeks.

I'm with you. I love the looks of many vehicles from the '60s and earlier, but I also like all the modern amenities--A/C, power windows, locks, steering, seats, etc. Oh, and the modern feature of starting and running reliably for 100,000 miles and more without hardly popping the hood.

I chased this one down in a parking lot... The license plate should make ID easy even if you cover up the badge...

I was born in the '70s, and that one was easy--didn't even have to look close. Corvair--unsafe at any speed! Funny plate, though--I didn't know his middle initial was F. :D

My brother had a corvair. It was an innovative neat car, loved the flat floor pan. I don't think it deserved the bad rep. I've driven worst cars.

I always thought this car was built from two front view drawings, stuck together.

The rear swing arm would have been handy if it had auxiliary steering.
If you got stuck, you could swing around, and drive the other end out first.

My buddy had a Corvair in high school and had a blast drving it in the snow. He could spin circles endlessly due to the weight and drive being in the rear. But, it was terrible to drive down the freeway, even at 60 mph. Couldn't hold a straight line.
