View Full Version : Laminating HPL to aluminum?

I know some of the contact cements will bond to aluminum (the original solvent-based ones).

But can I bond HPL (High Pressure Laminate) like Formica-brand stuff to aluminum w/o problems? I'm most concerned about the thermal expansion coefficients being different, causing the surface to warp (I'd like it to stay flat).

I tried finding the thermal expansion coefficient for HPL and couldn't find anything.

I'd use 100% silicone caulk - the bond will be sufficiently strong enough and should give you plenty of thermal expansion shear strength.

I wonder if the caulk would cure. Silicone caulk between metal and HPL seems a lot like caulk still in the tube.

we do this for trade shows and have had no problems. One year a customer want and aluminum cafinish and the next they want HPL but want to use their old cabinets. We just use the same contact adhesive that we always use
