Anyone know if a dial indicator that has a short spindle? Under 4 inches? 5 inches seems to be the standard. Most of them advertise the diameter of the dial but not spindle length.

You are looking an AG-1 dial indicator. The more common ones are AG-2's. Go o ENCO (use-enco.com), and be sure and look at current sales flyer, as they almost always have one on sale.

Grainger or McMaster-Carr are also sources. Enco is frequently a low cost supplier, but not always.

Beside, McMaster also has a lot of other cool stuff. :)

If you spend enough - Look for enco coupons too - 20% off and free shipping or 30% off are common. Min $ applies usually. On that ended friday was:
"Don't miss this exclusive email-only double offer! From now through Friday, use both promo codes: TW625 and SHIP625 for an additional 20% off* and free UPS ground shipping on your order of just $149 or more (excluding machinery)." Feel free to try it.

MSC is another good source for MRO supplies.

I have an SPI dial indicator (24-306-03) that has a 1 1/2" dial and the stem is about 3 1/4" overall, reads to 0.0005". You can put longer or special purpose tips on the stem, depending on your application.

All three of these indicators came from eBay. The 2 on the right were practically new, and similar models should be available from MSC or similar sources. The 2 on the right are also more difficult to hold than the "traditional" dial indicator, one of the problems with small indicators.
