View Full Version : What type of fan do you recommend?

Now that we have had our first days of triple digit temperatures, I am thinking of adding another fan. Currently I have a 36" floor barrel fan that does move a lot of air, but was thinking of a wall mounted fan to mount above my lathe.
I know someone out there has the perfect solution.
Thanks in advance

How about a SA or GW or CL air conditioner.

Since you're in Texas, the best answer is probably an air conditioner :D

How do A/C's handle all the dust? (I'm assuming window unit)

How do A/C's handle all the dust? (I'm assuming window unit)

I use a window unit in my shop here in Arkansas. It's located away from the worst dust makers, with an overhead air filter between. Still, no matter how good the dust collection may be there will be some dust in the unit. I just blow it out every now and then. No problems so far, and it's been there several years.

I can't even imagine trying to work in the 100 degree heat without AC. All fans do is blow hot air (and sawdust) around.

I was at Lowe's today, looking at a small 110v Whirlpool unit for $119. I thought I could put some extra filter material over the intake to protect the fins on the evaporator coil. Worst case, you could probably take the cover off and hit the evaporator with a garden hose or maybe an air hose. Just have to figure out where to put it. Those roll around units with the 6" exhaust duct work pretty well if you don't have an available window, but they cost a bit more. Still 110v, though.

You might want something a little bigger in Texas.

One that sits in an air conditioning cabinet. :) I have a window unit and I just clean the filter daily or more .

Window A/C is a must!! I tape some open cell foam on the intake...blow it out once a week. Given the 112's during the next few days...turn before 9am!

In Dallas TX the dew point typically runs between 60 - 80 degrees in the summer. A swamp cooler should work well under these conditions. It won't get you down to where you need a coat, but will make it bearable and will provide a lot of circulation to drive the dust out the door. I admit that I procrastinated this winter when the swamp coolers were cheap on Craig's List, but plan to buy one "real soon now".

+1 on a window air conditioner. I have a 12,000btu in my 15x30 shop and leave it on 76 all day long. During the 100+ it does get around 78-80 in there but it feels fantastic compared to the outside. I have to blow out the coils once a month or so. No big deal and amen to cool shop!

I just bought a portable for the shop and will put a hole in the wall near the lathe so I can set it near me. I figure cooling ME is what is critical and the unit is not big enough to cool the 20x30 pole barn with 12' wall and uninsulated roof. We occasionally have large cookouts and the number of people and door openings overwhelm the old central AC at the house, so the portable unit can be moved over to help. Have to see how that works out, but I can add a window unit to the shop later and get the BTUs up (8K now, but I would need about 15K to cool the shop).

Tom, we have these in our barn. Each stall has one. Let me tell you, they are heavy duty! You can get a dimmer switch from these guys, too that goes with it. That is what we have on each fan. They work great. We use the 20" ones.

Do like I do, I have my shop in Texas, but my summer shop is in Ruidoso, New Mexico. The airport says it 84 degrees, but my temperature gauge says it is 78.

Sounds like a window unit is the more popular suggestion. Today was a record high for this date in College Station..106. Supposed to be 93 on Tuesday. Wonder what the wind chill will be.
