I'm starting on building a crib for my upcoming granddaughter. I'd like to make sure I take advantage of all the safety research so want to follow the cspc guidelines. Unfortunately, the CSPC rules point to the ASTM site and they charge almost $50 to download the standard. Does anyone have a free link to the design requirements? I'm not interested in the testing requirements (slat breakage, etc), just the spacing, size, hardware requirements.

ASTM does provide a very crude online reader but doesn't allow copy/paste of the text. The entire website looks like it was designed by a 6th grader in 1998. It would still be nice
to have a link to the full standard. As a taxpayer, I paid for it; I should be able to get it.

Been there. The first is a summary if the standard and not the actual standard. The second just references the ASTM standard without specifying specifics.

thanks anyway.

A Canadian government standard - takes some reading, but the specs regarding slat width/spacing/height etcetera are in there - I don't imagine that the standards are all that different between the two countries. http://canadagazette.gc.ca/rp-pr/p2/2010/2010-12-08/html/sor-dors261-eng.html

One approach would be to make something just big enough for the first six months .Could be practical beautiful and an easily kept heirloom . Dealing with a 52 inch long piece of furniture for new infants has never made sense to me. Make a baby bed and avoid all the cage specs.

The last time I built a crib, I bought hardware from these folks -- http://www.productsamerica.com/ . IIRC, there is some discussion on the site someplace about the current crib standards.

Here's a link to the US Consumer Product Safety page on crib standards. The CSPC is the group that establishes the standards. http://www.cpsc.gov/onsafety/2011/06/the-new-crib-standard-questions-and-answers/
