Like The Schwarz used on a Woodwright episode a while back. Decided to try to make it flat and smooth. For some reson, I did the edge grain first, with the #5 jack plane. All I got were some curlie thingys:eek:264961But the edge was straight, and square. Turned the plank on it's face, and tried the jack plane again, at a 45 to the grain. Got a few scoops in the face. Got out MY #6 "Try" plane. Went at the 45s again264962and then took a swipe with the grain264963Not too bad. Well with the face now flat, time for Smooth. 264964264965264966Two by Millers falls, and that third one is by Wood River. All were a #4 size. Board is now flat, and glass smooth264967even that big old knot. System does work. On this plank, I did not need a scrub plane. The jack is a 14" long FranckenBailey #5. iron is almost straight across, just the very corners are dubbed. The #6 is a re-built DE6c. The #4 are ( L-R) M-F #9 , Dunlap ( by M-F) #4D BB, and the WR #4 V3. Took maybe 10 minutes time.

Well that looks like fun - just making shavings for something to do and to practice your skills? Ive been tempted to do that but thought maybe it was a nutty idea.

I think Ill follow your lead and practice a bit this afternoon Steve. Thanks for the good idea!

I keep a small block plane in the house near the fireplace to make shavings as needed to start a fire.

After a stressful day at work, using a plane can be a huge stress buster, my friend....
