Frank;
What is being offered by the supplier? I have 40,50,65 mm lenses-others are avaialable but lowere focal length lenses tend to be better for fine work.

You can go with 2" for cutting. I have tried to use 4" lens with 100W Firestar tube laser and I am loosing in speed of cutting so much that's it is not worth for me doing it.
BTW 80W laser will probably have 9mm maximum thickness of MDF cut through without making edges a way to charred. That's at least my maximum for my 100W laser and 2" lenses. I can do up 12mm thickness and even 16mm on this laser but speed is very slow and egdes have a quite noticeable angle.

I have another laser with 3" lens and I cut through 18mm MDF quite easy with 400mm/m set speed and edges quality close to excellent but it is a 280W monster.

How do you cut those sizes ??? i must have my lens to far from substraight i have a 80w reci tube in my machine and at best i can cut maybe 6mm. when i cut 3mm it is slow settings are 35S/100P

Allan;
35S/100P are not slow settings for cutting wood or mdf
I cut 3 mm wood/mdf at about 15S/95P with a 40mm lens and a 80watt RECI

I cut 3mm MDF with 4.4% of speed and 100% power, 6mm with 2% of speed and 100% power and for 9mm I use 1% for speed and 100% for power. I do not know how fast it is in mm/m. My laser software does not provide measurements for speed in these units. But if it matters I can check the actual speed. I use an air nozzle made by me and it's about 2-2.5mm distance from material. The lens is 2" so it is 50mm from material.

hey frank, for different work, you can use different lens. as you said, you do small work and sometimes granite engraveing. i suggest you two kind of lens, one is f40(focus distance 40mm) and another is f75(focus distance 75mm). you can put the two heads into one laser head. when you do small work, you can use f40 lens, and when you need do granite engraving, you can change the lens to f75. it is easy

With the western machines a 2 inch lens (50mm) appears to be very common for everything except very fine model work.
