I now know how to recognize the sound of "too thin" wood. LOL Fortunately, it was just a tiny little scrap I was practicing hollowing on.

Why, that's just a handy funnel that needs a little cleaning up on the top edge, Carole... ;)

I know what you mean. I have several items that now have "Bases" of a different kind of wood.

It is better that the inside be smaller than the outside Carole. Welcome to the club. Have you had the fun and excitement of a one piece bowl becoming a three piece bowl mid-turn. There's a whole other level to recognizing sounds.

Better luck next time...

Carole, as you can see, you need not feel like the Lone Ranger! Most of us who have tried bowls and/or HF's have done that. LOML came up with a decent idea on bowls, though: The last bottom I blew through, was right at the very center of it. The rest of the bowl looked pretty nice, actually so, she says, "Hey, why don't you cut it in half and you can make it into a wall sconce!!!" Neat idea!:)

When you see the silver you've gone too far. Congratulations Carole, It won't be your last, but the percentage of blowouts to good ones decreases over time.:)

Heck, I learned to do that right off the bat.

One way to keep from doing that is to establish you depth by drilling a hole as deep as you know is safe to using your tail stock & a drill chuck & drill bit then when you have turned down that far you know you have to stop. :)
