Ray, I don't believe that he "colored" the wood. I believe those are purpleheart, wenge, and zebrawood strips that are glued up.

Blair, nice job on the glue ups they lined up quite nicely. Of course, can't quite tell from the angle of the photos, but it looks like you got good form on the bowl, too.

Actually the woods are purpleheart, zebra, lacewood and black palm all picked for their different colors and grains. Never turned the stringy palm before but it held together. Always tough to get much form whe cutting on the band saw first you are tied to the angles you chose. And the steeper you go the more perfect you better be at the glue up. In one area it is very, thing.
