I recently had a job to engrave a dashboard that was painted with a metal fleck two part automotive paint. The customer wanted me to engrave and color fill the engraving. When I tried to engrave it the CO2 lasers couldn't engrave into the paint because of the metal flecks and I didn't want to use a YAG on it because it would have been difficult to keep everything in a nice line over the entire dash.
He ended up taking the dash home and putting three coats of clear coat on it and bought it back. Then I was able to engrave through the clear coat down to the paint and color fill. Once the fill dried he then sprayed it with another clear coat. The final job ended up looking very nice. The color fill appeared to be floating above the paint and really popped.
