I did this large hollow form from a piece of poplar crotchwood that had a bit of blue grain (probably the result of a fungus), turning it on a whim and not expecting anything worthwhile. I mean, poplar is a lousy wood to turn, and it really fought me-- a fair amount of tear out on the inside, but since the opening is so small no one is the wiser! It's roughly 11" high and 11" in diameter. The ebony feather was an afterthought during the photo session, taken from another piece that happened to fit. I had intended to make a decorative finial for this one, too, but somebody came by the shop and purchased it before I could turn something.

Terrific job on beautiful wood. Poplar can be fun, and you are right about the tear out. Luckily it takes well to sandpaper where you can reach it.

That is a beautiful piece as is the wood. Really nice.

Russel, very nice, while i usually do not like shinny turnings, this one the shinny finish brings out the subtle grain patterns of the crotchwood poplar and make it almost marble like
