5 x 9 Colored Ash / Maple.

A different take on my previous "3D Segments" technique. The textured blue body is another technique I've been playing with. The way the light hits the ridges gives an iridescent quality.

Wow - really cool effect John! Amazed at how you keep coming up with variations to your bowls! Keep up the good work!

That's fantastic John - I love the texturing, and the maple slats really take the piece up a few notches. Any chance of a quick peek at how you do it? I can't figure out if the maple pieces are steam bent to fit, or turned to fit...

John, you came up with something completely original and a real eyecatcher. I don't know how many of us try to do something no one else has ever done, but never have the creativeness to accomplish it, great job!

Actually Neither Lee. The bowl is cut with compound miter angles to give the effect. Every line is straight.

What tool do you use to cut the bowl? And how do you hold it for the cut?
I've wanted to do something similar. But the process eludes me.

I like the contrast, and the sculptural aspect of your bowl. I'm looking forward to where you take this.

Thanks for all the supportive comments.

Jim - I do the cuts on a bandsaw, holding the bowl in a jig. Figuring out the compound miter angles requires some trial and error.

Trial and error? Yikes! How many bowls did you ruin before getting it right?

I'd love to see the jig. Do you have to sand the cuts flat after bandsawing?

Amazing work. Thanks for sharing it with us.
