This was SUPPOSED to be my Idaho vacation. But, since we didn't have the money, we decided on spring cleaning. But, since I don't LIKE spring cleaning, I'm putting time in at the lathe. All things work out for the best.

Here's today's accomplishments.
Curly Ash Bowl #2. Tried for some hollowing this time. I have a lot to learn, but I made a custom scraper and gave it a go. It's the same size as the one from yesterday 8.5" Diameter. BLO so far.

Spalted Pear. Little bugger. 4" Diameter and 1.75" high. This has been drinking BLO all day.

Very fun day....didn't clean anything...got dirty. :)

I like them both. I like the pear best. Something about it makes it look "touchable". It might be the top rim. I really like it.

I too like them both but especially the "pear". Great figure in the wood and nice form.

Joining the crowd---the pear is great---but I like them both.
Keep the sawdust flying.

I think y'all talked me in to it...I like the pear the best too. Think I'll tear up another one tonight. ;)

Good looking bowls John and I like the way the ash takes the blo... looks good.

Yea, that pear really soaks it up. I put some of that Minwax wood hardener on it and it made it easier to work and finish.

John, those both look wonderful!

I really like the ash bowl, the low profile really looks great.

Hey Jeff...Thanks for the vote on the Ash! I've decided that I'll be giving that one away as the gift.

Howdy Ernie....So, with the wood hardener, do you rough out the piece and then put the hardener on or go all the way to the finish as sort of a pre-finish treatment?

John,

You are a smart and talented man.....excellent work! I love being at home....often we take a trip and I really wish I was home...I love making things and the garden, Today I saw a dove sitting on her nest on a wall hanging plant...wonderful to see.....latter an owl flew up to sit on a wire...he was watching all....simple gifts and the soul and spirit to see and share the joy in such things.....

BTW...very nice bowls!

Hi Bud,
Thanks! The big plan was to spend most of the time in your neck of the woods. I wanted to spend some time in the Owyhee Mountains up around Silver City and do some camping and rock hunting...Then to Strike Dam for a camping stop....then to a Fault line in the desert between Mountain Home and Boise. (When I was in high school, I found a hole that gives access to a cave that goes several hundred feet down). Then to Trinity Mountain in the Sawtooth range. Then home. Maybe next year!
