At the end of spring, last year, a strong storm blew through the Philadelphia Area, and knocked down a large white oak in Washington Square Park. I ride my bike through said park each day on the way to work, and a couple days after the rain stopped, the tree had been turned into a large pile of logs, roughly 24" long and 12-18" in diameter. I called the Fairmount Park Commission, and got the OK to load up my Accord with as much as it could handle.
This piece was rough-turned shortly thereafter…
The rim was turned thin straight away, and the bowl was left thick, to be returned later.
The effects of the drying are evident.

That's an interesting shape. I like it. Too bad about the split. Great grain.

initially, I was upset about the split, too... But, I think it's almost necessary for this piece. It did make it hard to sand, though...

The split/dark line looks like a defect that was in the wood, and goes across to the other side. The crack may continue on through the bowl, in part because of the differing thickness in the design, and in part because of the defect. I love warped bowls.

There is character in warpage, hope it doesn't get worse.

I've got one like this. The first half was ok, the second half is likely to come apart if I finish turn it. I've thought several times that I should cut it on the split and laminate something in between, then finish it.
