See Leaf ID #1 for the story. I did not find this one in my Hough book. Anybody know it? Good for turning?

Does it make helicopters?

Does it make helicopters?

Didn't see any helicopters, but the maples in town were dropping them.

I agree with Tim: Box Elder. It is a fairly soft maple that is "light, soft and close-grained; easy to work".

Box Elders make helicopters but it might be a little early, my maples haven't have made them yet.

Found this on the net:

Box elders are dioecious, which means each tree is either male or female. Both a male and female tree are needed for the trees to reproduce. Female box elder trees bear the seeds but both sexes have flowers.

There is a free ap called leaf snap made for smart phones and IPads. With the ap you simply use the device to take a photograph of an unknown leaf. The program will then identify the species. I have found this program very helpful. Pkennedy
