I finally did some research on the rip saw I picked up at a yard sale for $1. Happens to be a D8 swayback, 26", 5-1/2 tpi. Medallion style is 'DISSTON USA' placing it in the early 1950s. Will soon be pulling it apart for sharpening and cleanup.

Should make a decent user. 1950s saws weren't the most fabulous saws that disston made, but they're probably as good as any rip saw made now, unless wenzloff is tapering his panel saws (if he's even still making panel saws).

Can't complain for a buck, though. Just the screws in the handle are worth more than that.

All the Disston D-8 that were made through the 1955 acquisition the company by Porter, had excellent saw plates that were in fact taper ground.

The machine made totes, lack the grace and subtlety of the pre-1929 hand shaped totes, but no doubt the steel in these later saws was truly excellent.

All the best, Mike

Good luck...a little jealous of your find!
