I would like to get back into woodworking and start working on a new dining table. I would like to use book matched slabs (two pieces) to make a table about 84" x 40" and 1.5" thick. What are some sources in Los Angeles area or good mail order sources for this?

Try www.bellforestproducts.com (http://www.bellforestproducts.com) They are a Michigan company that ships all over the world. Tell them Bob Chapman sent you.

Thanks for the recommendation Bob.

Are there any other options within 100 miles of LA so I can see it and then buy.

Austin hardware in Santa Ana
peterman lumber in fontana
I was just at petermans today he has some nice black walnut slabs.
Austin has lots of different slabs plenty of walnut.

Great! Are the quality and prices similar at both? Santa Ana is closer to me if Petermans does not have something better Austin would make more sense.

Thanks!

I think you find better selection at Austin in Santa Ana.The slabs I saw at petermans were12/4 maybe too thick for your build.i did not flip the top one but it did look like it was a stack of flitch cuts.the one on top had a nice fern going about 1/3 of the way thru the middle that's what caught my eye.The prices are about the same between the two places.Good luck with your search.Wish I could go with you.I love going out to see what's new in inventorys.

Great to hear Austin has better selection as it is a lot closer to me. I will try to make it there in the next couple of weeks. First I need to finish cleaning up the garage and installing the storage cabinets so I can start working on the dining table.

If you are in LA proper I would give Damon a call over at Sierra Madre (http://www.sawingandmilling.com/). If you don't mind a bit of a drive Tropical Exotic Hardwoods (http://www.anexotichardwood.com/contact.html) has some beautiful monster pieces.

I've used "the lumber shack" online a couple times and they have some nice wood. No affiliation with them.
