I just Love my Lie-Nielsen hand planes. Have a piece of twisted flat sawn Sapele which is too wide for my 6" jointer. Took out my jack plane and thoroughly enjoyed the process.it may have taken longer, but I had the luxury of being able to hear my music and didn't have to worry about disturbing my neighbors (9:30PM).

And even though those planes are not cheap, their still cheaper than probably on or two therapy sessions.

The Schwarz is strong with this one.

A stack of Lie Nielsen handplanes will way nearly as much as a wide jointer, yet cost less.

If you're really good with them, they're faster than the machines.
Certainly the blades in the portables are easier to change, and sharpen.

What I like about planes, and other hand tools for the most part, are:
- not one trick poneys - shoot and edge, flatten a board, bevel/champher
- they can be transported to the work easily
- quiet
- healthy
- require you have an understanding of the wood

Love springs eternal when my planes are nearby or cradled in my hands.

Lets see; if you couldn't do it on your 6" jointer it didn't really take longer by hand. ;~)

There are ways to plane wood wider than the jointer. If I couldn't plane it on my 8" jointer,at my age,I'd use my Bosch electric plane to get it close enough to hand finish. Had enough decades of complete hand work. Wore out my shoulder and wrists doing it.

My favorites are my Bailey #5 jacks and my Bailey #8 jointer.

Every time I pick them up and hold them I get warm fuzzies.

Of course, the #8's could double as weight training equipment, so dual purpose there. Yay!
