Hey all,

I am looking for a new drill chuck to replace my Harbor Freight one. It's a two piece chuck with a 2MT shaft with a JT33 end. The drill chuck frequently pulls off the Morse taper adapter and I'd like to replace it with either a solid one piece drill chuck or one with threads attaching it to the taper shaft. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Rich;)

Yardsale and clist for junk boxes normally have decent jacobs chucks to be found for dirt cheap

or just put a drop of CA on the JT33 part of your arbour, then open the chuck all the way so that the teeth are not showing. Put the chuck over a piece of wood, then put the arbour into the chuck and give it a good whack with a hammer. it will stay on now until you use wedges to break them apart. I am assuming that you don't have a bottle of locktite red so I suggested CA.

The chuck coming loose from the arbor could be due to a couple of different problems:
dirt or grease on the taper - clean both pieces with solvent and put back together when dry
poor machining or dings on either surface - replacement may be necessary

Lots of high (and low) quality chucks are made just like yours, don't skip over this design just because of a bad experience.

To answer the question you asked, you can get threaded arbors also threaded for a drawbar at http://www.victornet.com/report/Arbors-Drill-Chuck-Straight-Shank-Misc-/1143.html

You can get a threaded drill chuck at http://www.use-enco.com/CGI/INSRIT?PMAKA=240-2822&PMPXNO=4839823&PARTPG=INLMK32

Integral chucks are very pricey. And, as has been stated, many problems are solved by cleaning the tapers and remounting with a firm, not brutal, smack with a mallet.
