Congratulations, Joe! From the pic, looks like that lathe has barely been broken in yet. :)

Great gloat, Joe - now find an area woodturning club and seek out some professional training classes, so you start off on the right foot and don't learn any bad habits!

Thanks for the advise, I live near David Ellsworth and thought the same thing about learning correctly. And I do belong to Lehigh Valley Turners Assoc.

Wonderful tool, Joe.
My early turning input is that all that power needs even more training. On several catches I have been glad I started small. So I think small diameter items are a safe place to start. That's the end of my knowledge and wisdom.

WHAT AN AWESOME MACHINE! Way to go. I hope to join the Powermatic club some decade. If this is the one that was $2,200, this is an official and highly honored "You Suck!"

I guess I do suck, thank you for the compliment.

If you have the opportunity to take a class with David Ellsworth, then go for it! He will teach you how to become as one with the wood! Just don't let him take you at the pool table!

Really, I've played 3 cushion billiards for about 45 years now. Maybe he'll play for turning lessons. I hope.

Wonderful start Joe...you won't grow out of that anytime soon. Be sure to search out local turners to help get you up to speed quickly and most importantly, safely.
Get your sharpening skills honed (no pun intended) early so you can go slower in speed till your technique improves. That's a big lathe capable of handling some large chunks of wood. Worst and most dangerous thing to have happen is a bad catch or a defect resulting in a piece blowing apart at high speeds. Take any rules of thumb on turning speed with a grain of salt as a 'maximum'...nothing wrong with turning slower.
Have fun and be sure to keep and date those first pieces you turn!
