I was at a street fair this weekend and saw a nice turned pepper mill it had a gear type handle like a cast coffee grinder. My question is anyone know where to find such a kit and is there specific woods and finishes to use that are food safe.

Thank you

As a rule, stay away from the typical woods that cause problems, black walnut, cocobolo, many rosewoods, so on. I use WoP and plenty of it on the exterior, the kitchen is a harsh environment!! I'm finishing a purple heart mill in a wine bottle shape with 12 coats of WoP...can't even tell! The leading commerical makers of mills, Peugeot included, and most of the top private makers say it's taboo to do anything to the inside. Just drill it and be happy...worry about the outside!
