Thanks again!!http://sawmillcreek.org/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

This is my first post on this side of the site (Neanderthal)http://sawmillcreek.org/images/smilies/eek.gif . I'm looking for a plane to clean up tenons. You may need more info to pick out a plane, so askhttp://sawmillcreek.org/images/smilies/confused.gif if you need more info. Thanks for the help

I don't have one yet (It's on my Wish List :o ), but by all accounts, you can't go wrong with the Veritas medium or large shoulder plane from Lee Valley. It's made specifically for cleaning up tenons. Several Creekers have acquired them recently, and I've heard lots of glowing reports about them.

Josh,

What Erin said....the Medium shoulder plane is the cat's meow for what you want to do. Also, it has a bunch more uses. It is a very handy plane to have. There are several different types that you can get. The Veritas comes ready to go right out of the box. If your funds are limited, you could take your chances on the bay  I use a Stanley No. 92 or 93 depending on how large the tenon is.

I have a Clifton shoulder plane and use it quite a bit. Noting better to size your tennon sides and shoulders.

You want a shoulder plane for shoulders and a skew rabbet plane for the cheeks.

Hence....you'll want/need at least three planes. Right and Left handed skew rabbets and a shoulder plane.

Of course....you could follow suit of some of us and just employ chisels for paring tenons.

I'll chip in with another vote for the Veritas shoulder plane. It may be my favorite hand tool. Just cut your tenons a bit fat, take a few swipes with the shoulder plane, and you can achieve a fit that will cause goosebumps! If you make beds and doors the large model would be the first one to get. Otherwise the medium sized model is just the ticket.

I am with John - a Lie-Nielsen 60 1/2R. Doubles as a good block plane and a better than average shoulder plane.

I have the LV Medium houlder plane and it is very good. I also have the LN....it is big! The Cliftons are very good also. I also have the LN 140 skew block which is very good also

I have both the LV Med. shoulder plane, and the LN 60 1/2R. I use either, depending upon the length of the tenon. I prefer to take a full width swipe.

I just recieved my new shoulder planee from Knight planes, and it exceeded in all ways what I expected.. I made my decision after skulking this site and reading rhe archives, untill I ran out of nit time. I didn't read a single uncomplementary post about Steve Knight or his site.
