View Full Version : Wood gloat and I saved my neighbor some money

My neighbor had two walnut trees taken down Saturday.

When they moved in three years ago I mentioned that if he ever got tired of the walnuts, I'd take the wood.

The tree service left the pieces long, so I could cut it up as I liked. The tree service would have charged my neighbor $400 to remove this from his property.

The larger pieces are 40 inches long. Largest diameter is about 20 inches. Anything bigger is too heavy for me to handle. I will mill these on my bandsaw. Most of the stock will be for turning. Some will become boards for flat work.

I plan to give the neighbor bowls and maybe make a fly tying cabinet for him.

My neighbor said he felt guilty because he wasn't able to help me load the wood on my truck. I told him I felt guilty for getting all this free wood, especially walnut.

Very nice Bill. It's great that the service left them long. Too often they get cut much too short and lose a lot of potential.

That is an outstanding score! Great ratio of dark to sap wood, not always like that. Ought to keep you out of trouble for a while. I love the smell of fresh green walnut shavings.

Great score.

It seems like a scam that the tree service was going to charge him $400 to haul away the wood. What were they going to do with it? Take it to the dump? No, they were planning on selling it as firewood and pocketing an extra $400.

Seal up those ends ASAP! The moisture content in the heartwood appears to be ready for turning, so I hope you have a barn available for storage!

In a lot of places there isn't a market for firewood, either because it's illegal to burn or it's a large city with a big population and few fireplaces per capita. Commercial mills typically won't take residential wood (risk of embedded metal), so no use for lumber. Most tree services around here chip the wood and take it to the dump, where they have to pay by weight to dump it.
