I was given a piece of boxelder recently and made this bowl from it, (the wood was already dry). The red areas had some serious worm holes. In hind-sight; a hollow form would have been a better choice with the red and worm holes at the top. It is 11" dia. X 4-1/2" tall and ~1/4" thick. Finished with lacquer. Comments and critiques welcome.

Good wood good shape good finish. I thought the pretty wood was supposed to be on the bottom.

I love this shape. The wood is fantastic. I would have had a fight with myself on the finish. I love the look of a more natural appearance such as a oil finish but shiny wins out more often than not I am afraid. When there are a bunch of turnings on display the eye always seems to get attracted to the shiny objects. Great choice on this one.

I'm not sure what I like better: the bowl or the photography. Both look awesome.

That is a combination of box elder and ambrosia beetle stains.......makes for some beautiful turnings......some of the holes are from the beetles boring in! Those beetles love maple! Some are from worms.......did you meet any of them when you were turning? Kerrrrssspppllaaaaatt!

Nice form on that bowl. BTW I like the worm holes right where they are.

Very nice Dennis! Will you have this at the May club meeting? I'm planning on being there!

Very nice Dennis! Really nice markings in the wood and your original form gives plenty of surface area to show it off. Does the staining show when you look in through the opening?
