View Full Version : BS all of a sudden runs in reverse!!!

Upon further investigation, this spontaneous change of direction seems to be due to a dead startup cap. Mine is 150uF @ 110V. I have been running this saw at 220V successfully for 3 weeks now.

Can someone confirm if my suspicion is true? Also, if it is true, where can I get an induction motor startup cap? Do Delta BS motors have these? I have a Delta parts and service center a few miles away. I didn't think to call today while they were open.

Thanx in advance!!!

You must have bumped the southpaw switch. Just flip the blade and use it as-is.

Ironically, I am actually left handed. Could it be a bad starter cap?

Bump... Anybody?

How did you test the cap?

Motor start caps are available lots of places: ebay, mouser, digikey, local electrical distributor, motor repair shop,...

The start coil connects to the common point of the two series connected run windings when wired for 220 hence receives half tghe supply viotage. You only need a 120 VAC (or 110) rated capacitor.

If the start capacitor was bad you would have to help the motor get started, you need to look elsewhere.

Boy, the only way I know of to reverse the rotation of a single phase AC induction motor is to reverse the phase of the "start" winding in relation to the "run" winding.. This wouldn't happen on its own. Maybe this link will give you some thoughts though..

If you reverse the polarity of the start winding in relation to the run winding.. The motor would reverse direction.

Most induction motors will run either direction with ease but single phase motors need a little help ( start winding ) to get them going.. The start winding will determine the direction the motor will turn ..

What is the model # and brand of motor ?
