California Buckeye burl. Difficult to find, but worth the effort. Can be spectacular.

This burl is about two feet across. It was larger but I cut off a bunch of pen blanks. These burls are root burls. Often full of rocks and dirt.

Wally those sure are fine looking. We have a lot of Buckeye around here but I never seen anything resembling a burl on them, maybe because they are underground.:D Our Buckeye is real soft and spongy and will rot very quickly and I don't know anything it can be used for. When we were kids we use to shoot each other with buckeyes using our sling shots, had some real wars.
I really like the taller HF.

Thanks Fred....the Cal. buckeye is different than eastern buckeye. Yes the wood is soft and very lightweight when dry. tI think that the burl is the only part of the tree that is usable for turning.

First class wood, shape and finish as usual Wally. Do you ever sleep? What tool do you hollow with?

Thanks Charlie...No the wite wood isn't sapwood. White, grey, black seem to be throughout the burl. Sometimes mostly white, sometimes mostly dark.

Those are beautiful Wally, just one of a kind of wood that stops you in your tracks and wants to make you look at it over and over, and your woodturning is superb as always.

I found out years ago that although the 2 buckeye trees are very different, the actual buckeyes produced are almost identical in appearance. A customer from Calif. had a buckeye tree in her back yard, and another in her yard in OH, and brought me a seed pod buckeye from each that were almost twins.
