I am working on a project to build a low rpm, large diameter sharpening wheel using a 24" stone.

I am pretty ignorant about motors but was wondering if something like this would work:

Basically, I would like to keep this pretty simple and have a motor attached to a shaft that will turn the wheel at about 60 rpm. Variable speed would be nice. But I think that once the wheel is turning (and I can give it a push to get it started) the motor will not have to work that hard.

What do you guys think? Any other motor ideas I should be considering? Do I need to get one of those big, heavy baldors and use pulleys to lower the rpms?

Why do you need such a large diameter stone to sharpen with?

So the stone does not create as deep a hollow grind.

Itd be cheaper to find a used 1/3hp motor on craigslist, then use a pulley.

That motor is an instrument drive, meant for low torque uses. (41 oz/in) Ain't gonna work.
As ^ get a 1/3hp motor and the correct pulleys.
You might even need 1/2hp as the friction of that wheel grinding something is going to create quite a bit of drag.
