I am working on a project to build a low rpm, large diameter sharpening wheel using a 24" stone.
I am pretty ignorant about motors but was wondering if something like this would work:

Basically, I would like to keep this pretty simple and have a motor attached to a shaft that will turn the wheel at about 60 rpm. Variable speed would be nice. But I think that once the wheel is turning (and I can give it a push to get it started) the motor will not have to work that hard.
What do you guys think? Any other motor ideas I should be considering? Do I need to get one of those big, heavy baldors and use pulleys to lower the rpms?
