I am looking for a lathe again after selling my old Woodfast. What would be a far price on a used PM 3520B that is 5 years old?

Thanks

Steven, my Powermatic is 5 yrs old this month. It's seen a lot of wood in it's 5 yrs. That said it may have some finish spilled on it & some stains & scratches but it runs just like the day I got it new. I guess it's worth what ever your willing to pay for it. I wouldn't be concerned by it's age at all. They do hold a good resale value as the price of new ones just keeps getting higher & higher.

I just purchased a 3520b used 5 years old and paid $2650. I also got the 18" extension bed, an index wheel and a dsut collector hood and stand for that price. I paid another $250 and got 3 chucks, extra jaws and some face plates. I felt pretty good about the price. It wasn't clean by any means but no rust on the bed so I think for a 5 year old lathe it was a fair price. They rarely come up for sale in my area so when this one came up I bought it. I figure if I don't mess it up I could probably sell it for what I paid in a few years.
Here is a picture of it.

Thanks, so the bed ext. new is about $400.
They are asking $3000, but I think $2000 - 2300 might be more like it.

Thanks again

I would say $2000 would be a bargain. The lowest you can get a new one for is about $3400 when it is on sale. Currently they are running about $4K new. I think there would be more than a few buyers out there willing to pay $2500 for a clean 3520b, especially if there was some extra(s) thrown in. Many are sold by word of mouth and never show up on Craigs List.

Well this one has no extras, a long drive to see it and the thing that worries me is the VFD going bad or the motor. I had a Woodfast that I bought back in 1996 and sold it last year. It got a lot of use, but I took care of it, no drips or rust. The next week I had second thoughts. Isn't that always the way. I didn't realize that they come down to $3400 onsale.

Isn't that always the case, too far away.
I think I am going to pass on this 3520B. For a little more, if it goes on sale, it will come with a warranty.

Steve,
The one on ebay is an "A" not a "B". There are differences but none that affect the quality. For instance, there is no speed indicator on it. As for your price on the local unit, I wouldn't sell my 3520B for 2K. I probably wouldn't sell it for 3K with the extension and extras. However, I still use mine and am not looking to sell it. If your seller needs the $ he may sell cheap. Here is what it is all about. What can you afford and how badly does he want to get rid of it. The market value has no real bearing. Start at 2K but have your top number in mind and walk away if it can't be bought for that. Then get ready to kick yourself in the butt if you miss it.

This is the same one that is listed on ebay. His ebay ad says that it is listed on his local CL.

When something sells or trades frequently, as stocks and bonds do, the spread or difference between the bid and ask price is narrow. When something does not trade often, as with lathes, the spread widens. PM 3520B's have very wide selling prices so good deals are available on used units for those who are patient. I bought an 8 month old PM 3520B five years ago for $1800 and could probably sell it for more now. There are bargains out there and you're wise to look.
