View Full Version : Pegboard Hooks; any decent ones?

I am going to put up some pegboard to hold wrenches, screwdrivers, and the like. My experience is that they just fall out. I have tried plastic and metal clips, but they are pretty worthless.

Any suggestions for hooks that stay in?

A few I have found:

Anyone tried these?

I use "heavy duty" hooks that I buy from my local hardware store. They don't have any special clips or attachment mechanisms, they're just made from 1/4" rod that *barely* fits into the pegboard holes. The friction fit works very well and they never fall out. I don't know the brand name, but these appear to be the same ones I've been buying:

Talons are great but, skip the kits and buy what you need. Like most kits, you end up with a number of pieces that will never get used. I use Talons for things that get a lot of off and on. For other stuff I use ones similar to what Michael shows. They fit snug and have never been a problem.

I use the heavy duty hooks as well and put these plastic keepers over the ones that tend to fall out. They are shaped like an M and have little barbs on the inside of the legs to keep them in the holes.

Search McFeeley's. They have some pretty heavy duty hooks that surely will not fall out.

I get mine from McMaster-Carr. I only use 1/4 inch pegboard, I only use the 1/4 inch ones and I only use the ones with the stabilizer post (the pin an inch down from the top where you put the hook into the pegboard). I don't use a lot of styles. For unique needs like custom tool holders I make plywood holders and mount them to the pegboard with #10 wire bent in the machinist vise and epoxied into the custom tool holder.

+1 on the custom tool holders. I find them more useful for tools and frequently accessed items.

Roger, You say 1/4 pegboard. Where do you buy it. I've looked for years in Houston with no luck.

I buy it at HD or Lowes. The thickness is probably only 3/16 but the holes are 1/4 and are on 1 inch centers. Some HD stock the 1/4 with a melamine face. That's nice for brightening the shop without having to paint them. The 1/8 pegboard is actually OK, I just never had any success finding really good 1/8 hooks with stabilizers on a consistent basis where I wasn't also forced to buy holders I would never use. The 1/4 holders are hard to find locally, but almost any industrial distributor has them at really good prices. Course you have to buy a box of 100, but it does eliminate having to shop for them again

lowes or hd only carry .125" inch here. I have some old .25" thick pegboard and that's what I've been looking for. Thanks though.

Mark,
I know I am in a different area, but I have found 3/16" thick at HD and Lowes. At mine it is over by the paneling and millwork area at the end of the aisle. Although last time, there was mostly 1/8" and only one stack of 3/16 that was in bad shape.

I inquired about 1/4" thick from other suppliers and it was quite pricey. I could get plywood cheaper or put two layers of 3/16 together for less. Its amazing how the availability of items differ from area to area. I haven't had a problem with the 3/16 as I have been putting mine in a frame. I think I got the idea from Shopnotes or Woodsmith. It makes it more rigid and you can add backing supports if necessary.

I have started using hardware store hooks that I picked up at my local store that was going out of business. Very Heavy Duty like these found at http://www.southernimperial.com/display-hooks-c-192.html They are also fairly cheap.

I've got some of those too. They are great for storing supplies and other items. I use mine mostly for sandpaper stored in the original packaging.
