Just wondering what opinions you have about lining a linen closet with cedar. Does it do anything to prevent mold or mildew or just moths? Does it repel any other insects?

Mold and mildew is caused by moisture and will occur whether or not there is aromatic cedar present. I don't think cedar repels all insects, but I am not sure.

The cedar smell goes away over time as the oils in the wood evaporate. To keep the smell, you will have to sand the wood to open new cells and thus the oils to the air in the closet. I had this in the house I bought years ago and ended up tearing it out and putting in sheetrock when we remodeled.

I believe cedar scent can be renewed by putting on more cedar oil. I thought I would quick check with a search and just found out there are a lot of uses for cedar oil.

This link tells me its good for a lot of pests:

This one tells me (besides some interesting things about cedar oil) that cedar leaf oil might be like Absinthe:

Sorry for rambling.

Recent tests have shown that cedar has no real affect on insects. But, some like the way it makes things smell.

Cedar oils will kill the emerging larvae of the wool moth. The larvae is what chews holes in wool clothing and is the reason Cedar has traditionally been used in blanket chests. It has no effect on adult insects of any kind.
