Several years back I engraved some that I think came from LL Bean.

That is a Keeper Link to the Flybox... Thanks...

John over on the CarveWright Forum made a very nice 3D Version like that and even gave the supplier of the inner foam. Something like that then Laser Engraved... Sweet.... With Trout Season to begin in my area of PA next weekend.

I used to make them myself (along with hand laminated trout landing nets) in a previous life (I was a weekend fly fishing guide - with a timber workshop!).

I still have a couple left for my own use these days but largely they just don't sell for some reason!

Mostly it's weight, you can buy the plastic ones that fit into your fly vest which are so much lighter.

As guide you pretty much carry everything that clients forget & as a result every pocket is stuffed full what with mobile phone waterproof digital camera and all the fly boxes (Nymphs, Drys, Wets etc).

You'd get fallen arches carrying all this stuff around all day.

I ended up with about 6 such wooden fly boxes jammed into every spare pocket in vest etc - coz you just never know what the trout are going to be feeding on until you get to the water & if you haven't got the fly to match the hatch your out of the game! 6 plastic fly boxes weigh almost nothing to carry.

I used to make them in batches, but the reality is that few if any ever sold - often i had to sell them for the cost of the flys in them just to get rid of them - making them was a dead loss except it was nice to have fly boxes and landing nets made from local timbers, to show the clients out on tour what trees each timber comes from as we made our way along a river or stream!

Eventually ended up conducting fly fishing tours out of a river boat i built coz it was too hard to carry the fishing gear everywhere & we could fly fish for trout all the way down the river to the ocean & then saltwater fly fish off the beach... for our version of 'salmon'

Sometimes when the freshwater was running hard, we'd catch rainbow trout all the way to the river mouth at the beach!

Seems like a lifetime ago now.

This was Jace Paddleford, all the way from Oklahoma - spent a few days fly fishing with me downunder here in Oz.. Occasionally wonder what became of the guy! Probably 20 years ago now ~ 1995?

But yeah - weight is the killer with timber fly boxes in my experience, bye the time I had enough of them to contain all the flys I needed to carry.

Your mileage may vary of course.

Today I decided to add fly boxes to my business and setup a FB page and bought a dot com. I am in a good location and have a marketing plan that I think will work. I will do it in my down time from the fire tag side of the business. Looks like it's time to tune up that old Epilog Laser... :)
