I got a note from Rob Lee this morning telling me that the replacement plane blades, in PM-V11, for Stanley planes are now available. He thought they would be on the web site this morning but I couldn't find them. I did call and order a blade for a knuckle joint Stanley 65 and the customer service rep took the order so I guess they're available. The plane blade was $35.90. I don't know how much the other blades cost - you'll have to call or find them on the web site.

Here's some info Rob sent me:

Awesome...and they're only a dollar and something each! Cheaper than the buck brothers irons!

Oh poo...I looked at the list before I read your message, they're not a dollar and something each.

Yeah, I knew better than to believe that you could come even remotely close to getting the bar stock for $1.99. Everyone can dream sometimes, though.

Too bad these didn't come out during free shipping. Then we could've really narrowed your margin.

(that said, they are by no means expensive given that they're in A2 ballpark).

So,those blades without cap irons have no slots?

David Weaver

That would be great april fools if they didn't. "Here kids, see if you can work your way through this hardened iron...."

Hi George -

No - blades without cap irons are still regular Bailey-style blades(with slot). Some people want improved cap irons, so we give an extra discount on the set...

Hi -

We'll be doing two series of wooden plane blades....

The first wil be 6-8"" long tapered blades in O1 - 1 7/8, 2 1/8", and 2 3/8".

We'll also do some coffin smother type shorter blades (cant find the sizes at the moment).

We'll also be releasing 3 wooden plane kits (you supply the wood) that will use Norris-type adjusters.

Lots on the go!

Cheers -

Rob

For reals?????!!!! Sweet!. I love transitionals (as jack/fore planes anyway; just picked up a new beauty of a 26) and have really been wanting to see something like . This is exciting for me, since transitional are so often in piss poor shape, and/or way overpriced when they are in good shape. Can you share with us what the blade widths will be? Can you tell use if they'll be single iron or double iron? I know I know, you need to keep some things a surprise.

I saw these out yesterday when I was looking at a new A2 blade for my newly acquired 4 1/2 smoother.

Then I remembered it was April 1st. :( I figured I'd hold off on the rejoicing of PM-V11 Stanley/Bailey blades until later.

So let the rejoicing begin! Yay!

Blade widths are 1 5/8, 2, and 2 1/4" .

Cool thanks for the info. Well I hope they're not "exactly" transitionals. As much as I like them, they certainly had a few design flaws. I basically just want something that will let me make a wooden foreplane, that has a thick blade and a rock solid adjuster, in the the length I want. I can adjust a wedged plane fine, but I do prefer to have an adjuster so this will be cool.

Norris made some great wooden planes with their adjuster. Rob, put me down for one kit in each size :)

Sounds like they're a lever cap and screw away from being an infill kit.

Will any of these tapered irons be coming in double iron format?

2 1/2" wide 3/16" thick parallel slotted iron would be nice, too. I know there aren't millions of planes out there that take them, but there are a lot of 2 1/2" iron panel planes, and so far as I know, the only option is Hock or vintage.

Marples made some cool transitionals too. Bailey adjusters, but the plane is a different design from the Stanley/Sargent transitionals.

I've been eyeballing this beauty on The Best Things for a while. I'm not going to cough up the $150 for it when I have a 2 good user 26s (really, 1 decent user, 1 very good user), but this t hing sure looks like a nice tool to use.

I quite like Norris adjusters too, so I'll be just as happy with something similar that has one of those instead.

george wilson
04-02-2013, 10:49 AM
That Marples is SO much nicer looking than the Stanley transitionals!! When I started teaching shop in 1963,the shop across the hall had a whole toolroom full of Stanley transitionals, wooden spokeshaves,etc.. I had no idea at that time that they'd ever be worth anything. One day, those tools all were suddenly gone, and all new tools were in there. I had no idea they were slated for updating. Probably all the old tools went to the dump, too.

Yeah, I keep looking at that plane at TBT as well - it's so purty . . . it'd be tempting to snag a frog off a bedrock and see if you could make one . . .
